BOARD COMMITTEES AND NETWORKS

The Elders’ Forum is drawn from different religious and regional communities, largely based on their experiences in peacebuilding and development work. The Forum provides advisory services to the Council of Presidents on a wide range of development issues; builds consensus on contentious issues at the district, regional, and national levels; carries out advocacy and policy influence for IRCU thematic programs and national issues of concern; mediates in conflicts arising between political parties, religious groups, ethnic or cultural groups, individuals and institutions; sensitizes the public through mass media and other fora on mediation and conflict transformation mechanisms, good governance and other national issues; and advises IRCU and other institutions, and leaders on peace building, good governance, HIV AIDS, matters concerning public health and issues of district, regional and national concern.

IRCU established the National Task Force for Peace and Conflict Transformation, which was later transformed into the Peace, Justice and Governance Thematic Committee. Its role is to mediate in conflicts among political parties or candidates; support the establishment of similar Task forces at regional level; organize dialogue meetings with different stakeholder; and liaise with other organizations and individuals concerned with elections to promote transparency, peace and respect of human rights.

IRCU has established the HIV/AIDS and Public Health Thematic Committee to oversee the implementation and delivery of the HIV/AIDS service FBOs.
The general functions of the Thematic Committees of the board include considering and making recommendations on all matters referred to them by the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda Board and Council of Presidents; monitoring the implementation and results of all interventions under their jurisdiction; acting as a strategic think-tanks for the ongoing work of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda to address emerging issues; providing forums to discuss issues of interest to the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda

IRCU has operationalized the Women of Faith Coordination Committee as a governance organ to oversee activities of the women of faith in the country. It was created to promote the importance and role of women in communities and hence raise their visibility. Its programs target women, youth, children and the entire family and this is done by engaging and involving women to make contributions to transform lives of the target groups.

IRCU has operationalized the Uganda Youth Inter-Faith Network (UYIN) as a governance organ to oversee activities of the youth in the country. It was established in response to the Hiroshima Declaration that also mandated the formation of Religions for Peace Global Youth Network at the 2006 World Youth Assembly in Hiroshima, Japan, to harness the energy and commitment of religious youth leaders all over the world to advance the mission of multi-religious cooperation for peace.
