Inter-Faith Women of Uganda Call for Action on Gender Equality
Kampala, Uganda – The Inter-Faith Women of Uganda have called for urgent action to address gender equality challenges in the country. Addressing the press prior to International Women’s Day under the theme “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,” the women of faith highlighted key issues affecting women, including economic exclusion, land rights, corruption, and the high cost of education and healthcare.
While acknowledging the government’s efforts, Mrs Florence Musoke, the chairperson of Inter-Faith Women, urged policymakers to ease loan access for women, enforce land laws, and strengthen inheritance protections for widows. They also condemned electoral violence and the commercialization of politics, which they say disproportionately affects women’s participation in governance.
Additionally, the women of faith, called upon parliament review the Marriage Bill 2024 proposal to criminalize cohabitation and instead advocte for affordable marriage practices. They also stressed the importance of balanced parenting to ensure both boys and girls receive proper mentorship.
The women urged religious leaders, the government, and parliament to enact policies that protect women’s rights and create an equitable society.
