PRESS STATEMENT ON THE NATION-WIDE STRIKE BY
TEACHERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dear Country Men and Women,
We greet you in the name of the Almighty God, and express our heartfelt condolence to families that lost loved ones in the recent terrorist attack on Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. Furthermore, we wish those who sustained injuries quick recovery.
We speak today to express our deepest concern over the ongoing strike by teachers in public schools, and the likely effect this will have on the future of millions of our children enrolled under the Universal Primary and Secondary Education. We share the pains and dilemmas of parents, children, teachers and government during this trying moment.
This strike follows a similar one recently by Makerere University staff. We are happy the latter was resolved and students have reported for studies. Reports from different parts of the country show that most Government-aided primary and secondary schools have remained closed despite pleas from Government and other stakeholders to teachers to report on duty on Monday 16th September, the official start of the third term.
